Beito Co-Authors Book About Unsung
Champion of Civil Rights
Dr. Linda Beito, associate professor of social sciences, along with her husband Dr. David Beito, professor of history at the University of Alabama, authored "Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power."
Howard, a wealthy black planter and surgeon, led massive rallies and successful boycotts for equal rights in rural Mississippi. However, his place in history has been overlooked. Drawing from dozens of interviews with Howard's friends and contemporaries, as well as FBI files, court documents, and private papers, the authors present a fittingly vibrant portrait of a complicated leader, iconoclastic businessman, and tireless activist.
